Jožef Horvat Toni

Jožef Horvat Toni is the coordinator of the Roma Darts League Goričko, a member of the Union for the Development of the Roma Minority – Preporod, and the president of the association Narcisa. He is a long-time volunteer with the Red Cross and the initiator of numerous projects within the Roma community.

1. What inspired you to establish the Roma Darts League Goričko, and how do you assess its development so far?The idea to establish the Roma Darts League Goričko came from a desire to strengthen bonds within the Roma community in our area. We wanted to create a platform where Roma of different generations could socialize, collaborate, and get to know each other through a sport that is accessible to all. I’m pleased to say that the league is now in its second season and we are very happy with its development.

2. Were you involved in darts before, and how did that influence the creation of the league?Yes, definitely. Darts has been a part of our lives for a long time. Our team had already participated in a general league, where we gained a lot of experience and met many darts enthusiasts. This love for the game and our desire for closer community connection led us to the idea of founding our own league.

3. How does the league operate, and who is participating in the second season?The league consists of seven Roma teams from the Goričko area. Matches are held regularly, and the results are published on our website and Facebook page. In the second season, we’ve seen even more engagement from the teams and a growing number of fans. Anyone from the Roma community—regardless of age or gender—who is interested in darts and wants to spend their free time actively can participate.

4. What are the main goals of the league for the Roma community, and are they being achieved?The league’s main goals are to promote connection among Roma, strengthen community spirit, and involve youth in activities that are not related to digital media. We’re glad to see these goals being realized in the second season, as youth participation has increased and interpersonal relationships have deepened.

5. How does darts contribute to intergenerational connection in your community?Darts is a game suitable for all age groups. In our league, younger and older community members regularly meet, compete, and learn from one another. This strengthens intergenerational ties and promotes the transfer of knowledge and values. We’ve seen even more intergenerational collaboration in the second season, which makes us very happy.

6. How do you encourage youth participation in the league, and how have they responded?Youth are vital to the future of our community. We encourage their participation through special events, training sessions, and workshops where they can develop their skills and learn from experienced players. The response in the second season has been exceptional; more and more young people are joining teams and actively taking part in matches.

We also regularly post updates on our Facebook page, where followers can comment, share their impressions, and stay connected to everything going on. We invite everyone to follow us and support our teams.

8. What achievements did you accomplish in the first season, and what are your goals for the second?In the first season, we managed to bring together a large number of participants and supporters, and we established a stable organizational structure for the league. We also built strong interpersonal bonds among the teams and members. In the second season, we hope to expand our reach, attract more teams, and improve the logistics and organization of the competitions so we can offer even higher-quality and more diverse events.
