Andrej Šarkezi Bajić

What happens when a car mechanic steps into the cabin of a truck and onto the stage as a comedian?

In this short interview with Andrej Šarkezi Bajić – Bakreni, we uncover how a spontaneous video post on social media sparked a wave of laughter that has spread across Slovenia over the past three years. We'll learn why comedy is a bridge between the Romani and non-Romani communities—and what empowering message Bakreni has for young Roma on their path to personal success.

Can you tell us about your professional journey?By profession, I’m a car mechanic, but I work as a truck driver at the company Pomgrad.

How did you start your journey in comedy, and what does comedy mean to you?My journey began completely by chance. I posted a video on TikTok that went viral, reaching 250,000 views in just a few days. After that, I started posting humorous content regularly on social media.

How does comedy break down stereotypes, and what role does humor play in connecting the Romani and non-Romani communities?People often see Roma as temperamental, joyful, and sensitive. Through comedy, I’ve shown that we can also laugh at ourselves. I’m proud to say I’ve performed over 250 shows across Slovenia in the last three years—90 just this year alone. I believe I’m doing something good, as people are buying tickets to see and hear me. Through comedy, I’ve helped promote the Romani community a lot in the past year.

What encouraging message would you like to share with young Roma?Don’t pay attention to what others think—do what makes you happy, and one day, hard work will pay off.
